Anchors aweigh! It’s time to set sail and explore the deep “see” galleries full of artworks. Your ship’s Crew (Museum staff and volunteers) will help you navigate your artistic journey. Plotting the course according to family-friendly stories, the Crew will help unlock the mysteries of deep see(ing) adventures! Explore some of your favorite artworks in a fresh way by participating in gallery stories and a hands-on art project. All ages welcome but stories and projects are geared to younger children.

Target Tuesday for Toddlers
Ahoy there Toddlers! Put on your captain’s hat and grab your favorite First Mate (grown up) and sail on over to the Museum for a morning of art exploration and hands-on discovery! Learn more about the artworks in the Museum’s collection through stories, music and toddler-friendly projects. Let your grown ups know that this is a great opportunity for you to spend quality time together sharing, learning and having fun! (All projects geared to children not yet in kindergarten.) This program is free of charge thanks to generous support from Target.

Autumn is a season of color, wonder and often introspection. Take advantage of these rich autumn days and join us for a tour that allows for personal exploration, discovery and reflection. Through inspiring quotations, thoughtful questions, and group discussion participants will see original artworks in a new and meaningful way. Join board member and museum educator Michael Nelson as we weave an evening of gallery exploration and personal reflection into a memorable Museum evening. Light appetizers and wine will be served at 6:00 p.m. with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. This program is free but space is limited. Please RSVP by calling (507) 474-6626. Who are the Creatures in Your Neighborhood?

Take a sprinkling of the Mississippi, a handful of nature, and a group of live critters and what do you get? You get an interactive, imaginative and up close learning encounter with educator and naturalist David Stokes! Stokes, an award winning interpreter and educator has been described as “John Hanna meets Robin Williams!" Through the magic of real animal encounters, storytelling and songs Stokes will bring out the explorer in everyone! Learn first-hand about the same wildlife, habitats, and natural wonders that inspire so many of the artists featured in the Museum!
Pirate and Princess Party
Saturday, October 18- 12:30 p.m.
Arrrghh you ready for a high seas adventure at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum? All you sea faring mates and gracious princesses put on your best pirate or princess costume and head over to the Museum where you’ll be treated like royalty. After exploring the rocky seas of Jack Gray’s paintings in the current exhibit, Men in Fickle Seas, we will read How I Became a Pirate, make our own eye patches, princess crowns, and more. Painting for Paws
Tuesday, October 21- 4-7 p.m.
Teen painters wanted for a fun afternoon of painting to benefit the Winona Area Humane Society. Come help us design and paint a chair, or two, that will be auctioned off at the WAHS Wine Tasting and Silent Auction on November 7th at the Visions Events Center. This is the purr-fect chance to have a dog-gone good time and benefit our furry friends as well. Wear old clothes and drop by afterschool anytime between 4 and 7pm to help us create a chair masterpiece! Please call to sign up. However, last minute participants are welcome. “Impressionism and Water: Peering Beneath the Surface.”

Dr. Robyn Roslak will speak as part of Winona State University’s Lyceum Lecture Series and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum’s Lecture Series with her presentation “Impressionism and Water: Peering Beneath the Surface.” Dr. Roslak is an associate professor of art history at University of Minnesota Duluth and the author of several articles and a new book Neo-Impressionism and Anarchism in Fin-de-Siècle France. She will offer a general overview of the Impressionist movement and explore the artists’ use of water as a frequent subject in their paintings. The lecture is geared towards the general public and everyone is welcome. A members’ reception will be held at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum afterwards at 8:30 pm to meet Robyn and view some Impressionist paintings from the Burrichter/Kierlin Marine Art Collection. Scrappy Saturday: Make Merry with Scrappers Haven and MMAM
Saturday, December 13- 1-4pm
The weather outside may be frightful, but the crafting inside will be delightful. The afternoon will begin with a stroll through the galleries for some artistic inspiration. Katrina Volkert, owner of Scrapper’s Haven in Winona, will lead us through a mini-album project that is sure to delight any loved one as a gift under the tree, or a family heirloom for you to cherish for years to come. Katrina will help you as you make your own mini book in a family theme. Fill the book with cherished photos from an event or from the year, and you will go home with a completed gift or keepsake. This special class will be limited to the first 16 people (ages 14 to 99). There will be only a minimal $10 materials fee, thanks to the generous support of the Ernest and Sally Micek family (in memory of W.B. “Bill” Gautsch.) Please bring 10-14 photos (4” x 6” or smaller) and, if you can, a paper trimmer, double-sided adhesive, glue pen, and/or scissors. Ho ho hope you can come!
Winter Wonderland Walkthrough

A beautiful sight, you’ll be happy that night, walking through a Winter Wonderland… It’s that time of year of again! The magic of winter and holiday excitement is upon us and a stroll through the Smith Folk Art Gallery is sure to get everyone eager for the arrival of Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick. Join artists Marilyn and Leo Smith as they give a personal tour of their exhibit, “Jon to name very soon,” and share some of their favorite pieces and memories from holidays past. Create a special memory of your own and have the artists sign any of their collectible pieces available in our gift shop. Hot cider, cookies and holiday cheer will be plentiful!
